Lincoln Motor Company (via experiential agency Gradient)
A shipping-container studio on Pier 17.

Experiential agency Gradient brought The Self-Portrait Project in to add an interactive photo component to Lincoln Motor Company's summer activation at the South Street Seaport in New York City. Set inside a custom-modified shipping container on busy Pier 17, the installation turned heavy local and tourist foot traffic into thousands of studio-quality self-portraits, with the mirror framed against the East River and the historic four-masted Peking clipper ship.
The brief
Gradient approached The Self-Portrait Project to add an interactive photo component to Lincoln Motor Company's activation at the South Street Seaport in New York City. The goal was to capitalize on the heavy local and tourist foot traffic passing through busy Pier 17 during the summer.
What we built
A custom-modified shipping container offered visitors refreshments, shade, and comfortable seating, with an SPP photo mirror at one end. The mirror pointed out toward the East River, using the picturesque four-masted, iron-hulled Peking clipper ship as its backdrop. Motorized hinges on the roof and platform folded out at the start of each day and folded back over the mirror at night, doubling as protection from the elements.
The outcome
Over four activations comprising 29 days, SPP enabled thousands of images to be made and shared by almost two thousand participants — 1,958 in total, generating 4,580 images and 3,091 shares.
