Self Portrait Project
Policy

Terms of use

The agreement for using our site, studios, and mirrors — written so the rights you give us match what you actually consented to, and nothing more.

The short version

You own the portrait you make. We only use it in the ways you agree to — deliver it to you, show it in the archive if you make it public, and use it in our own artwork only if you separately say yes. We don’t sell it, license it to other companies, or feed it to outside AI. You can change your mind. The rest of this page is the detail.

Agreeing to these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and Self-Portrait Project, LLC and Selfportraitp, Inc. (together, “SPP,” “we,” “us”). By using our website, visiting a mirror, or sitting for a portrait, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the services. If you’re using them on behalf of an organization, you’re agreeing on its behalf.

The portrait you make, and the rights you give us

You own your portrait. You keep ownership of the portraits you author with us. You give SPP only a limited license to do specific things you’ve chosen:

  • Store your portrait and deliver it to you.
  • Show it in the Living Archive — only if you have made it public.
  • Use it in SPP’s own artwork, such as the Living Portrait — only if you have given separate, explicit permission for that use.

What we don’t take. We do not take a perpetual, unlimited, or freely sublicensable right to your image. We don’t sell or license your portrait to other companies, we don’t use it to train outside AI, and we don’t ask you to give up authorship of your own work. You can withdraw these permissions, make a public portrait private again, or ask us to stop using your portrait in anything new — at any time.

Our full commitments on AI and your image live in the AI policy.

Using our site and services

Please use the services lawfully and with respect for others. Don’t try to break, overload, or gain unauthorized access to our systems; don’t scrape or harvest the archive; don’t upload unlawful, harmful, or infringing content; and don’t impersonate anyone or misrepresent your rights to an image.

Our content and marks

The site’s design, software, text, branding, and the Self-Portrait name and mark belong to SPP or our licensors, and are protected by law. Participants’ portraits belong to the people who made them. Nothing here transfers our intellectual property to you, or yours to us beyond the limited license above.

Events, installations, and paid work

Activations, permanent installations, custom builds, and studio sittings may be covered by a separate written agreement or order. Where a signed agreement conflicts with these general terms, that agreement controls for that work.

Disclaimers and limits

We work hard to keep the services running and accurate, but we provide them “as is,” without warranties we can’t reasonably stand behind. To the extent the law allows, SPP isn’t liable for indirect or unforeseeable losses arising from the services. Nothing here limits rights that can’t be limited by law, including your consumer and privacy rights.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, and any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts in New York City — unless the law where you live gives you the right to resolve it closer to home.

Changes, and how to reach us

If we update these terms, we’ll change the date below and, for meaningful changes, do our best to tell you. Questions go to hello@selfportraitproject.com.
