Big Buck World Championship
A studio built inside a Big Buck Hunter cabinet.

For Big Buck World Championship XV, held over two days in Chicago in the fall of 2022, The Self-Portrait Project built a photo booth using its proprietary tech inside a decommissioned Big Buck Hunter Pro arcade cabinet. The cabinet's light guns were wired as camera triggers and the camera shot through a two-way mirror where the CRT screen once sat, turning the game itself into the studio.
The brief
Big Buck World Championship XV, the fifteenth edition of the competitive Big Buck Hunter tournament, was held over two days in Chicago in the fall of 2022. The activation needed to give participants branded, studio-quality self-portraits that could live in an online gallery, play on screen at the venue, and be handed to the client for social media and other promotional use.
What we built
A photo booth was built using the studio's proprietary tech inside a decommissioned Big Buck Hunter Pro arcade cabinet. The cabinet's guns were wired as triggers for the camera, and the camera shot through a two-way mirror positioned where the CRT TV used to be. A fabric mural depicting an actual competition site from the video game was printed and set up as the background, and captured images were layered with the client's logos and event information.
The outcome
3,449 portraits were captured and posted to a user-friendly online gallery reached by scanning a QR code at the cabinet, and also delivered to the client via a Dropbox folder for social and promotional use. Portraits were displayed live in the competition venue on a large projection screen and, at times, ported to a live Twitch feed covering the competition, reaching an audience of almost one hundred thousand over the course of the two-day event.
